The aquaculture project
We are studying the production of native fish in floating cages on the Paraguay River. This is the main concept. If it proves unfeasible, we will evaluate alternatives without quietly changing the goal.
Pre-feasibility study
Three scenarios, one main
- ACages in the river channel
- Main concept. Floating cages in a stretch of river with suitable current, depth and access. Requires authorization to use the riverbed and for navigation.
- BBackwater or inlet
- Benchmark. A sheltered area connected to the river, with less current and less river traffic, if it is legally and technically suitable.
- CLand-based facility
- Contingency. Confined ponds or tanks, if the in-water scenarios are not feasible.
Scenario C will not quietly replace A: if we change scenarios, we will say so.
Objectives
- Produce quality fish with a technically sound farming system.
- A controlled, traceable operation, from stocking to dispatch.
- Develop sales channels before committing to large volumes.
- Reduce losses through production, health and operational controls.
- Verifiable costs, revenues and margins.
What we do not know yet
- Which stretch of river: no site has been chosen. Bathymetry, current data and a year of water measurements are needed.
- Whether the authorities allow cages with native species in the river channel: no specific procedure has been published.
- The price of compound feed in Paraguay: it still needs to be quoted.
- Winter water temperature at the site, which changes the length of the cycle.
Pre-feasibility study: we are evaluating cages in the river and in backwaters connected to it. Feasibility depends on authorizations from MADES, DGPCRH, the Naval Prefecture and MAG, which have not yet been requested.
